Attar or Eau de Parfum? How to choose between oil and spray
Attars are alcohol-free perfume oils that sit close to the skin and last for hours. Eaux de parfum project further and shift as they dry down. Here is how to pick.
Walk into any Indian perfume shop and you are really choosing between two traditions. One is the attar — a concentrated perfume oil, distilled without alcohol, worn on the pulse points and meant to bloom slowly with body heat. The other is the eau de parfum, an alcohol-based spray that lifts off the skin, fills a room, and evolves in stages over a few hours.
Neither is better. They behave differently, and once you know how, choosing gets easy.
Attars: close, warm and long-wearing
Because there is no alcohol to evaporate, an attar does not announce itself. It stays within arm's reach and releases slowly — which is exactly why a small roll-on lasts so long. Warm, resinous materials suit this format best: sandalwood, oud, amber, spice.
SAWOOD is the clearest example in our range — saffron and cinnamon over a heart of oud and rose, drying down to creamy sandalwood and amber. FORESA takes the same oil base somewhere cooler: green leaves and citrus zest over pine and vetiver, finishing on cedar and oakmoss.
Eaux de parfum: projection and movement
Alcohol carries fragrance upward and outward. That gives you presence in a room, and a scent that genuinely changes character — a bright opening, a floral or fruity heart, then a base that settles in for the evening.
NIGHT QUEEN opens on bergamot and saffron, moves through jasmine and tuberose, and rests on amber and oud. ROSEY MUSK is the softer counterpart, and RASPOP the playful one.
A simple way to decide
- Office, daily wear, close conversation — attar. It reads as personal rather than performative.
- Evenings, weddings, celebrations — eau de parfum, for the projection.
- Hot, humid weather — attar. Alcohol flashes off faster in heat; oil holds.
- Sensitive skin — attar, since there is no alcohol to dry the skin.
- You want the scent to change through the day — eau de parfum.
Many people end up wearing both: an attar on working days, a spray when the occasion asks for it. You can also layer them — a woody attar underneath a floral spray gives the top notes something to hold onto.
